 EMAS Intercounties Clout Report

On Sunday 27th March the 1st EMAS Intercounties Clout team tournament was held, at Kettering Cricket Club, Northamptonshire. The round was a double FITA clout, shot at 165 metres for the gents, and 125 metres for the ladies. Lincolnshire was represented by 9 of our finest, and I would like to thank and congratulate them all:

Recurve: Steve Arnold, Penny Bedford, Roger Sale
Longbow: Rosemarie Cawkwell, Patricia Newman, Alan Staples
Barebow: Janine Cioni, Graham Crampin, Robert Flint

I was struck by the spirit and enthusiasm of our team, and I think we all had a terrific day. Our recurves placed a fine second behind Northamptonshire, and Penny Bedford deserves credit for being the highest individual scoring archer of the day (a magnificent 282), and taking the individual recurve medal. Our longbows battled valiantly, placing 4th (Northamptonshire won). Patricia Newman shot a superb 157. Rosemarie and Alan struggled to reach the required distances - it really is a very long way to reach with a longbow, but perhaps gained a few useful tips to gain a bit more yardage next time around. Despite all of us being complete novices to clout shooting, our barebow squad managed to place third. I was pretty chuffed with my score of 153, until Robert informed me he had got a fabulous 183 - clearly he has a talent for this type of archery. It is hoped to include compounds in next year's event. Overall, I think quite a few of us were on a pretty steep learning curve, and could do even better given another go, but a really enjoyable day - thank you to the organisers, and I would recommend trying clout archery to those (like me) who haven't tried it before.

Graham Crampin, Lincolnshire Senior Team Manager
